Unilever Just Bought Tatcha for an Estimated $500 Million

We all know someone who adores Tatcha — a friend, a family member, a duchess, or perhaps yourself. Those fans are in very business-savvy company because it turns out the folks at Unilever have had their eyes on the brand, too — and this week, the multinational company, which already owns hundreds of brands in a variety of categories, agreed to buy the California-based, Japan-developed company.

“Thanks to Vicky’s passion and expertise, iconic products like The Water Cream and The Silk Canvas have become the cornerstone of long-term consumer loyalty,” Vasiliki Petrou, Unilever executive vice president and CEO of the Prestige Group, said in a statement referring to Vicky Tsai, who founded Tatcha 10 years ago. “We are really looking forward to working with this amazing team and to continuing to grow the brand globally.”

The official price of the acquisition wasn’t disclosed, but WWD reports that the deal "approaches $500 million,” and Bloomberg reports that investment bank Bryan, Garnier & Co estimates Tatcha’s 2018 sales to be $70 million.

You may be most familiar with Unilever as the parent company behind some of the most familiar and popular drugstore brands. If you’ve ever bought anything by Dove, Simple, St. Ives, Axe, Noxzema, Suave, Tresemmé, Pond’s, or Vaseline, you’ve purchased a Unilever product. But it’s not just drugstore brands that Unilever owns. Ren, Dermalogica, Murad, Hourglass, Living Proof, and Kate Somerville are all part of the corporation’s prestige portfolio. Tatcha is also not the first beauty brand Unilever has bought in 2019; earlier this year, it added French skin-care brand Garancia to its lineup.

Bloomberg says this latest acquisition is very on-trend within the industry, noting, "The world’s largest cosmetics companies have been acquiring upstart brands in recent years as they search for the next big hit, often picking labels that attract younger, trendier shoppers,” citing Estee Lauder’s acquisition of Becca, Rodin, Glamglow and Too Faced, as well as L’Oreal’s purchase of CeraVe and It Cosmetics.

Although it is unclear what Tsai's role will be once the acquisition is complete, it's very clear that she's excited about the new partnership. “When creating Tatcha, our dream was to make a brand that would live for at least 100 years," she said in a statement. "That dream can come true in our new home with Unilever."
