John Krasinski’s ‘A Quiet Place 2’: What We Know So Far

Emily Blunt acting her heart out in A Quiet Place

Since 2005, John Krasinski was primarily identified as Jim from The Office. But, after the release of A Quiet Place, which he co-wrote and directed, he became known as a filmmaker of vast acclaim and widespread success, and fans are eagerly anticipating his next venture.

That next venture will be the follow-up to A Quiet Place, which was an international box office hit. The 2018 drama focuses on a family, led by real-life husband and wife John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, that must live in silence to survive a post-apocalypse brought on by extra-terrestrial monsters that hunt by sound.

Since A Quiet Place 2 was announced very quickly after the release of the first film, fans are curious how John Krasinksi is going to go forward with the sequel. What is in store for the characters and this world? What more is there to learn about the monsters?

We have our questions about A Quiet Place 2, as well, and have done our best to find answers. Read more about John Krasinski and the upcoming follow-up to his horror phenomenon here. Beware: spoilers for A Quiet Place are ahead.

John Krasinski tries to protect his kids in A Quiet Place When Is The Release Date For A Quiet Place 2?

A Quiet Place was an instant cultural phenomenon when it came out on April 6, 2018, acquiring instant widespread acclaim and healthy returns at the box office. The $17 million thriller nearly tripled its budget in its first weekend domestically and went on to gross more than $340 million worldwide.

So, naturally, Paramount announced plans for A Quiet Place 2 that same month. Screenwriters Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who penned the film before John Krasinski added his own spin, had previously hinted at ideas for a follow-up before it was even greenlit.

Talk of A Quiet Place 2 went on as the film’s success increased, receiving awards nominations and wins (Emily Blunt won the Screen Actors Guild award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role). Its release date of May 15, 2020, was confirmed in February with the following tweet from director John Krasinski:

John Krasinski’s tweet also confirmed another pressing point of interest regarding the sequel.

John Krasinski rushing to save the day in A Quiet Place Is John Krasinski Returning For A Quiet Place 2?

John Krasinski’s character in A Quiet Place, Lee Abbott, met a bitter end by acting as monster bait to save his son Marcus (Noah Jupe) and daughter Regan (Millicent Simmonds) at the film’s climax. However, Krasinski is returning to the world of the film from behind the camera.

John Krasinski, who rose to fame as Jim Halpert in NBC’s American iteration of the mockumentary sitcom The Office, had a very low-key career as a director previous to A Quiet Place. He made his directorial debut in 2009 with an adaptation of David Foster Wallace’s Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, followed that up with the family dramedy The Hollars in 2016, and directed a handful of episodes of The Office in between.

His breakthrough to the mainstream as a director was taking on A Quiet Place, which saw a major departure for John Krasinski as a filmmaker, actor, and a fan. Though he has starred in more dramatic roles such as Michael Bay’s 13 Hours, he has been known primarily for comedies both from behind and in front of the camera.

Furthermore, John Krasinski has stated in interviews for A Quiet Place that he is not a fan of the horror genre, which the creature feature can easily be categorized under. What attracted him to the project, however, was the element of family and how deeply he found himself relating to the story of parents struggling to raise their children in a post-apocalyptic environment, being a father himself.

John Krasinski originally intended to pass off A Quiet Place 2 to new filmmakers, until new ideas for a follow-up that could work began to materialize. Later, with inspiration from producer Drew Form and his wife Emily Blunt, he began writing the sequel before signing on as director.

However, John Krasinski insists that “sequel” is not the appropriate term for A Quiet Place 2, but rather, as Emily Blunt coined, “the second book is a series.” Whatever that means, it begs the question...

Emily Blunt contemplates her future in A Quiet Place What Is Next In Store For The Characters In A Quiet Place 2?

In A Quiet Place, the world has been rendered a complete wasteland as society has fallen into near non-existence at the hands of unthinking, unfeeling monsters with an acute sense of hearing. We see this world purely through the eyes of one family.

Lee Abbott (John Krasinski), his wife Evelyn (Emily Blunt), their daughter Regan (Millicent Simmonds), and son Marcus (Noah Jupe) are desperate to remain quiet, following the loss of their youngest son Beau (Cade Woodward) and with a new baby on the way. They take refuge at a farm that they have reinforced as a soundproof fortress, which serves as the main setting of the film.

There is one scene from A Quiet Place which takes place away from the farm, in which Lee has to desperately plea with an unnamed man (Leon Russom) to keep quiet, upon discovering his wife’s destroyed corpse. The man does not comply, letting out a loud, long winded scream, allowing the sound-hunting creatures to take him.

This is the only other character we see outside of the Abbotts through the entirety of A Quiet Place. For how briefly, yet pivotally, he appears on screen, you cannot help but wonder what other survivors there are left, living in silence like the Abbotts, and what their stories are.

While we still are lacking essential details as to what the plot of A Quiet Place 2 is, those involved in the project have provided hints through interviews.

We know that Emily Blunt will return as Evelyn Abbott, which means we should also expect to see more of Noah Jupe and Millicent Simmonds as the Abbott siblings and their new infant brother. The family seems to have gained a better handle on the apocalypse having figured out that sound is just as much of a weakness for the monsters as it is a strength in the final moments of A Quiet Place, so perhaps we can expect to see them fleeing the farm setting.

Additionally, we should also expect to meet a few other survivors. Batman Begins’ Cillian Murphy has signed on to star in A Quiet Place 2, as well as Bryan Tyree Henry, of Atlanta and 2019’s Child’s Play fame.

With promise of gaining new perspectives from additional characters, A Quiet Place 2 may be shaping up to be a fascinating expansion on the 2018 original. Based on the aforementioned tweet by John Krasinski, the director seems very excited to return to this monster-infested world. Speaking of monsters...

The monster from A Quiet Place Will We Learn More About The Creatures in A Quiet Place 2?

One of the more unique elements of A Quiet Place is that, while it is a sci-fi horror thriller at face value, at its core, it is a slice-of-life drama focusing primarily on the struggles of the family at its center. The deadly, sound-hunting creatures the characters fall prey to are merely an obstacle.

While the monsters are terrifying and pivotal to the plot of A Quiet Place, not much else is known about them. What exactly are they? How did they get to Earth? What is their purpose of being here?

A Quiet Place offers a few hints to the monsters’ origin in one scene that shows newspaper clippings covering the walls in Lee’s (John Krasinski) basement workshop. Headlines suggest the U.S. military failed to contain the invasion due to the creatures’ nearly impenetrable armor or how “multiple landing sights” were spotted, leading one to believe they are of otherworldly origin.

Many would agree that the subtle approach to the science fiction elements are what kept the story of A Quiet Place fresh. It appears, though, that A Quiet Place 2 will be providing further insight into the origin of the monsters and the events that led to civilization’s ultimate collapse.

With less than a year until it is released, anticipation for A Quiet Place 2 is high. My only hope is that the answers we get about the aliens and the fall of society still remain somewhat vague, potentially raising more questions and keeping the world of A Quiet Place fresh and thought-provoking.

A Quiet Place has a big, fascinating world to explore and I am very curious about what we shall soon learn from John Krasinski’s upcoming follow-up and where his career as a director takes him. Until then, it will be quite a challenge to keep quiet.
