Toyota Supra set to return to track, showroom

Toyota says the Supra race car will evoke the dynamism and character of the production version.

Toyota Motor Corp., after several months of speculation, said the Supra will return to U.S. showrooms and officially unveiled the Supra race car to replace the Camry in NASCAR's Xfinity Series starting in 2019.

It's the first time Toyota has confirmed plans to revive the storied nameplate in the U.S.

The new Supra race car was introduced Thursday at Daytona International Speedway.

“When you talk Toyota and cool cars, Supra is the first thing that comes to mind for many auto enthusiasts,” said Ed Laukes, group vice president of Toyota Division Marketing. “Supra’s return in production form is huge news, but now we’re also going to see this iconic sports car return to American motorsport."

The production version of the Supra has been developed as part of a joint venture between Toyota and BMW.

"From a marketing perspective, it’s important to have a race car that evokes the dynamism and character of its showroom counterpart," Laukes said. "We’re confident we’ve accomplished that with Supra, and we hope racing fans the world over will proudly cheer its success on track.”

Toyota has fielded the Camry in NXS competition since 2007 and the Supra is making a return to the marketplace for the first time since 2002.
